Academy Nominations

Services AcademyEach year Senator Bennett enjoys the opportunity of nominating Utah students for appointment to the Air Force, Army, Navy, Merchant Marine Academies.  The process is now open for candidates seeking a nomination for appointment to the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Merchant Marine, and/or West Point (Army) academy classes that will be entering in July 2011.

Requirements:

Applicants must be legal Utah residents and United States citizens, at least 17 years of age but not past their 23rd birthday when they enter the academy, unmarried, and with no children or other legal dependents.

Selection criteria will include interviews, SAT/ACT scores, class rank, GPA, school records, evaluations by teachers and counselors, extracurricular and athletic activities, leadership potential, and motivation.

Senator Bennett intends to offer nominations only to those applicants who he believes has a reasonable chance of receiving an academy appointment. You should therefore take advantage of every opportunity to strengthen your application. This includes retaking SAT or ACT tests if there is any doubt your scores are not only passing, but competitive. (Generally, only the highest individual score in each category from all tests taken is used in evaluating your application.) Information from the academies will tell you the levels you must reach to be considered "competitive" in key test areas. You may also submit to this office a brief, optional essay explaining why you want to attend a military academy.

Deadline for nomination applications:

The deadline for the receipt of a completed application by Senator Bennett's office is October 15, 2010; however, because the process can be lengthy, interested applicants are encouraged to begin their online application early. Interviews of qualified candidates will take place in November or December in Salt Lake City and Senator Bennett will submit nominations to the academies in January 2011.

While most of the application process is online, a high school transcript, two Evaluation Forms and a Residency Form must be submitted to Senator Bennett's office as hard copies.

Required Forms

  • Residency Form - Forms must be submitted by mail.
  • Evaluation Form - Form must be submitted by mail.

Direct application to the academies:

The academy application process requires that you apply both to your congressional offices for a nomination and directly to the academies for an actual appointment. Applying to all of the academies may improve your chances of receiving at least one appointment offer. Academy inquiry cards are available through high school counselors and academy liaison officers in Utah. You should contact the academies directly for candidate packets. To do this, send your name, address, telephone number, Social Security number, birth date, high school, and year of high school graduation to the following:

Additional Applications

In addition to submitting an application to Senator Bennett, you should also consider applying to Senator Hatch and your own congressperson for a nomination. Expanding the number of applications may add to your chances of obtaining a nomination from at least one member of the delegation. You may also apply to the Office of the Vice President of the United States.
