LIEBERMAN PRAISES FINE’S TENURE AS DEPT. OF JUSTICE IG

Longtime Public Servant “Exposed Waste and Wrongdoing”

WASHINGTON—Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., issued the following statement Monday in response to the planned resignation of Glenn Fine as Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General (IG):

“Glenn Fine has embodied the best aspirations of the Inspector General Act.  Through Republican and Democratic administrations alike, his office has produced fair and high quality audits and investigations that have exposed waste and wrongdoing, and generally challenged the Department to do its most effective and efficient work. I know the Department of Justice, the IG community, Congress, and the public have greatly benefited from his service – not to mention those who served with him in the Office of Inspector General over the last 15 years. I wish Glenn the best in whatever new challenges he undertakes.”

HSGAC has jurisdictional responsibility over the IG community. As a presidentially appointed, Senate-confirmed IG, Fine has no fixed term and serves at the pleasure of the President. He wrote to President Obama and Attorney General Holder Monday announcing his intention to step down on January 28, 2011.
