Featured Issue: Healthcare

Skyrocketing costs have forced many small businesses to either shift the growing cost of their insurance programs to their employees or eliminate their health plans altogether. The result: the majority of workers haven't seen any increase in their buying power in the last decade, since any additional compensation is quickly absorbed by their increasing health insurance premiums. Fiscal Responsibility

Fiscal responsibility is more than a Democratic goal or a Republican goal: It's what Hoosiers expect. That's why I joined the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition. The Coalition members share my views on fiscal accountability; promoting policies that move us toward the goal of balancing our nation's budget.

One such policy is reinstating the "Pay-As-You-Go" budget rule (PAYGO) which the House reinstated during the opening hours of the last Congress. Every month Hoosiers have to make tough decisions to balance their budgets, PAYGO simply says Congress should be held to the same standard. It prevents the House from considering legislation with direct spending or revenue provisions that would effectively increase the national deficit. This is an important tool in restoring fiscal accountability and bringing our budget back into balance.

Fiscal responsibility also means taking a hard look at government spending every time a bill comes across my desk.  During my time in Congress, I have supported amendment after amendment on the annual appropriations bills to reign in the costly growth of many government programs.  It's not always easy to stand up to big government interests, but Hoosier taxpayers expect their representative to set priorities and keep taxes low.
