Thune Re-Elected Republican Policy Committee Chairman

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) today was re-elected Chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee (RPC) by the Senate Republican caucus for the 112th Congress. Thune was first elected as Chairman on June 25, 2009. The Chairman of the RPC is the number four leadership position for Senate Republicans and deals directly with policy formulation for the entire caucus.

"I am grateful to my Senate colleagues for their continued confidence in my ability to serve as the Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee," said Thune. "America faces great challenges including unemployment nearing 10 percent, rising health care costs despite the recently enacted health care bill, a national debt approaching $14 trillion, and threats to our national security. As the new session of Congress begins, I look forward to working with my colleagues to develop policy solutions that address the concerns of Americans and take this country in a different direction."

The U.S. Senate majority and minority party policy committees were created in 1946 to coordinate and enhance legislative policy making. The policy committees hold weekly policy lunches to gather and discuss issues before the Senate and review the anticipated agenda. The experienced policy analysts on staff at RPC produce in-depth research papers on many issues before Congress, as well as legislative updates that assist Senators and staff regarding floor debate and votes.
