About Our Government

The State Governments

The United States consists of 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the territories of Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands. In addition, the self-governing Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands signed a covenant of political union with the United States of America in 1978, and citizens of that Commonwealth were granted U.S. citizenship in 1986.
