Congressman Charlie Melancon Speaks on the Issues that Matter Most in Louisiana
I grew up in South Louisiana, and I stayed here to raise my family. I think South Louisiana
is a great place to live because of our values and sense of community.
As your Congressman, I am working hard to keep our towns and
communities strong, so that our young people will want to settle and
raise their families here, too. Please click on the links below to find out more about my positions and
voting record in Congress on the issues that are important to you. If
you have further questions, or would like to share your opinion on a piece of
legislation or an issue Congress should address, please don't hesitate
to email me.
"As the representative for much of south Louisiana, hurricane
recovery will always be a top priority for me. As we move forward from this
challenging time, I will keep fighting for greater federal investments in the
coastal restoration and hurricane protection projects that are crucial to
protecting our citizens, communities, and way of life. "
"Building
levees and restoring our coastal wetlands are not projects that we can afford
to put on the back burner any longer. We
must take significant action today to protect America's
EnergyCoast
and the thousand of Americans that live and work in coastal Louisiana."
"Access
to affordable, quality healthcare is an important issue to so many Louisianans. I believe the choices we make now will dramatically impact the
future of healthcare in our country. We
must work together to rein in the high cost of healthcare and make health
insurance and treatments affordable for all Americans."
"I
have lived my whole life in south Louisiana,
and believe there is no better place to spend your days. While we have faced more than our share of
challenges over the past few years, together we are working to rebuild our
hurricane-damaged homes, lower the cost of homeowners insurance, and create more
affordable housing."
"Our
nation's great strength comes from the neighborhoods and communities that form
it.To help keep our towns in south Louisiana safe, I will
continue working to provide our local law enforcement with the resources they
need to prevent and reduce crime."
"I
believe that high standards of accountability in education are important, but
unless we provide the necessary resources, our students and schools are going
to continue falling short of these new standards. "
Energy and Environment
"I
believe we need an energy policy that puts our nation on the path toward being
energy self-sufficient, so we are not at the mercy of foreign countries like Venezuela and China."
"Having
grown up in south Louisiana
I understand the importance agriculture plays in the day to day lives of so
many citizens. We must continue to support strong and sustainable
agriculturalpractices in south Louisiana"
"The United States
has the finest military in the world, and we must continue to provided them
with the resources they need to remain the strongest. We must fight to ensure
American troops receive better health care, better pay, and the benefits they
have earned."
"During
this time of uncertainty it is essential that we secure our borders to protect
American jobs and keep us safe from potential terrorist attacks.I am committed to creating an immigration
policy that will help, rather than hurt, our citizens and industries."
"As members
of Congress, we have a responsibility to make sure taxpayer dollars are being
used wisely and efficiently, and this resolution goes a long way toward
accomplishing this goal."
"Tax
relief for middle class families will strengthen our economy and help so many Louisianans who work hard and play by the rules. I have voted in Congress to
reduce taxes for the middle class and support eliminating the death tax.I believe our country needs a fiscally responsible tax policy that both rewards success and takes care of our
needs."
"I've
been the owner of several small businesses in south Louisiana, so I personally understand how
hard it can be for small businesses to make ends meet. However, no employee can be expected to
survive on just $10,700 a year, which is the current annual earnings for
fulltime minimum wage workers.I believe
the best way to move more Americans into the middle class is to make sure they
can earn a meaningful and fair wage, if they put in a full day's work."
"I remember how proud I was of my son, Seph, when I taught
him how to shoot, and we still enjoy duck hunting together as father and
son. I am looking forward to sharing these same experiences with my new
grandson. I feel blessed to live in a state known as "the Sportsman's Paradise."
"I am
strongly pro-life, and have worked in Congress to reduce abortions in this
country.I have partnered with Democrats
for Life of America and several of my colleagues in Congress in sponsoring
bipartisan legislation that would provide many vulnerable women with the
support and information they need to choose life for their unborn
children."
