Science and Space

Rep. Waxman is a longtime supporter of a robust and independent national science community and believes that science must provide the basis for informed national policy on issues such as environmental protection and medical research funding. He supports increased funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DoE) Office of Science, and other research agencies and believes that the investment is returned many times over in improved health and quality of life for countless Americans. Rep. Waxman believes our government must continue to play an aggressive role in advancing scientific and clinical research in order to recruit and train future generations of scientists and engineers.

In his previous positions as Ranking Member, and later Chairman, of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Rep. Waxman investigated reports that scientific integrity at federal agencies had been sacrificed to further a political and ideological agenda under the Bush Administration. Rep. Waxman is a member of the Congressional Research and Development Caucus and the Congressional Nanotechnology Caucus.

As a member of the Congressional Space Caucus, Rep. Waxman believes space research requires pragmatic government support. Exploring space has brought us technological advances that have practical applications on Earth, and it is imperative that these opportunities be thoroughly examined to ensure that funding for NASA continues to support our long-term objectives.
