Natural Resources and Wildlife

Representative Waxman has worked hard for the strongest environmental protections possible.

He is strongly opposed to oil and gas drilling that could harm public lands, particularly in areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), our national monuments, our coastlines and other ecologically sensitive areas.  In the 111th Congress Representative Waxman has cosponsored  numerous bills to designate additional lands as wilderness areas:

  • H.R. 1906, The California Ocean and Coastal Protection Act, would prohibit oil and gas leasing in the Outer Continental Shelf located off the coast of California
  • H.R. 39, The Udall-Eisenhower Arctic Wilderness Act, would provide permanent protection for more than 1.5 million acres of the coastal plain of ANWR.
  • H.R. 1925, The America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act, would protect over nine million acres of public lands in Utah.
  • H.R. 980, The Northern Rockies Protection Act, would designate more than 22 million acres of land as wilderness in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Oregon.
  • H.R. 3692, The National Forest Roadless Area Conservation Act, would enact President Clinton’s 2001 Forest Service Roadless Area Conservation Rule into law.
  • H.R. 21, The Ocean Conservation, Education, and National Strategy for the 21st Century Act, would protect the full range of benefits of healthy marine ecosystems for our future generations.
  • H.R. 1018, The Restore Our American Mustangs Act, would limit euthanasia and sales of wild free-roaming horses and burros.
  • H.R. 556, The Southern Sea Otter Recovery and Research Act, would establish a program of research, recovery and other activities to provide for the recovery of the southern sea otter populations along the coast of California.
  • H.R. 2455 would initiate a process to work with other nations to terminate the commercial trade in whale meat.

In addition, Congressman Waxman was a strong supporter of Public Law 111-11, The Omnibus Public Land Management Act.  The most significant conservation bill in 15 years, this legislation will strengthen tourism and rural economies by devoting more than 2 million new acres of land as wilderness and parks.
