Other Issues - Animal Welfare

Representative Waxman has worked hard in Congress on behalf of the humane treatment of animals.  He is a strong proponent of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which protects and recovers imperiled species and their ecosystems, and fights for the highest possible funding to  implement this important law.

In the 111th Congress, Representative Waxman has cosponsored a number of bills to improve animal welfare.

•         H.R. 503, The Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, would stop the slaughter of domestic and wild horses for human consumption.

•         H.R. 1018, The Restore Our American Mustangs Act, would limit euthanasia and sales of wild free-roaming horses and burros.

•         H.R. 2455 would promote international whale conservation, protection, and research.

•         H.R. 3710, The Refuge from Cruel Trapping Act, would ban the use of body-gripping animal traps in our nation’s 550 National Wildlife Refuges.

•         H.R. 3381, The Protect America’s Wildlife Act, would prohibit the hunting of wildlife from aircraft.

•         H.R. 556, The Southern Sea Otter Recovery and Research Act, would establish a program of research, recovery, and other activities to provide for the recovery of the southern sea otter populations along the coast of California.

Representative Waxman has voted for a number of other animal protection initiatives in the 111th Congress that have passed the House of Representatives:

•         H.R. 411, The Great Cats and Rare Canids Act of 2009, would assist in the conservation of imperiled great cat and canine species such as the lion, cheetah, jaguar and African wild dog.

•         H.R. 509, The Marine Turtle Conservation Reauthorization Act of 2009, would authorize funding for an additional five years for marine turtle conservation projects in foreign countries.
