Committees and Subcommittees (111th Congress)

Press Releases

In 2007, I was selected to serve as Chairman of the House Committee on Science and Technology. No Tennessee member of Congress has chaired a full committee in more than 30 years. I also have the privilege of serving as a senior member on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. These committee positions allow me to be a stronger advocate on issues that matter most to Tennesseans: health, energy, research and technology, math and science education.

Below you will find information about the legislative responsibilities of the Committees I sit on.

The Committee on Science and Technology, Chairman

The Committee on Science and Technology recognizes that scientific advancement is one of the keys to maintaining America's competitiveness in a global marketplace, and it is committed to advancing legislation that develops new technologies and increases the economic growth of the country. The Committee handles issues ranging from energy technology development, climate and weather monitoring, math and science education programs, nanotechnology, the space program, aviation research, to technical standards for various industries including energy, health care, and telecommunications. The Committee has jurisdiction over non-defense related research and development (R&D) at a number of federal agencies, including the Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Science Foundation (NSF), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
