Service Academy Nominations

Acquisition Reform

The Nomination Process To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must meet the eligibility requirements established by law and be nominated from an authorized person including a Member of the United States Senate or the House of Representatives. I may nominate applicants who are legally domiciled within the boundaries of the 11th District of Texas. There are five Service Academies: The United States Air Force Academy, Naval, Military, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard Academies. Nominations are required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Each year hundreds of the best and brightest young men and women write my office to apply for appointment to a service academy. Applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements and be nominated by a U.S. Senator or a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

An applicant must meet the following eligibility requirements and submit an application before October 27, 2010 for the freshman class of 2011.

The applicant:

  • must be a United States citizen;
  • must be at least 17 years old, but not yet 23 years of age, on July 1, 2011;
  • must be unmarried;
  • cannot be pregnant or have a legal obligation to support children or other dependents;
  • cannot have passed their 23rd birthday.

Students interested in a nomination should mail a completed Academy Nomination Application to Joanne Powell in my San Angelo District Office.
