The "Big First" District, which I represent in the United States House of Representatives, is so named because it is one of the largest congressional districts in the country. It is larger than 25 states and roughly the size of Illinois. The "Big First" covers more than 57,000 of Kansas' 82,277 square miles and is the 11th largest congressional district in the nation. The district consists of 69 counties located in central and western Kansas and is characterized by the small town values of hard work and community.

Congressional districts are determined by each state's legislature and are based on the decennial census. There are 435 congressional districts within the U.S. House of Representatives, with each representative serving approximately 600,000 people. While representation in the U.S. House of Representatives is based on the population of each state, each state has two representatives in the U.S. Senate.

The following counties are part of the First Congressional District of Kansas: Barber, Barton, Chase, Cheyenne, Clark, Clay, Cloud, Comanche, Decatur, Dickinson, Edwards, Ellis Ellsworth, Finney, Ford, Geary, Gove, Graham, Grant, Gray, Greeley, Greenwood, Hamilton, Haskell, Hodgeman, Jewell, Kearny, Kiowa, Lane, Lincoln, Logan, Lyon, Marion, Marshall, McPherson, Meade, Mitchell, Morris, Morton, Nemaha, Ness, Norton, Osborne, Ottawa, Pawnee, Phillips, Pratt, Rawlins, Reno, Republic, Rice, Rooks, Rush, Russell, Saline, Scott, Seward, Sheridan, Sherman, Smith, Stafford, Stanton, Stevens, Thomas, Trego, Wabaunsee, Wallace, Washington, and Wichita.
