Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings & Emergency Management

Mario Diaz-Balart, Ranking Republican

The Subcommittee conducts oversight of programs addressing the federal management of emergencies and natural disasters, oversees agencies and programs promoting economic development, and has oversight of federal real estate programs.

“The Federal Government Should Stop Sitting on Its Assets”: With deficits over a trillion dollars the federal government simply cannot afford to sit on money-losing properties and empty federal buildings. The federal government is the single largest office property owner in the country, but because of gross mismanagement, the Obama Administration spends millions of dollars to operate vacant and nearly vacant government buildings while leasing costly office space in the same areas. Republican Committee members call on the Administration to sell off its money losing properties or redevelop them in a way that saves taxpayer money.

Stopping Wasteful Government Projects: After Committee Republicans helped expose a $15 million stimulus project as a job-killing waste of taxpayer money, the Obama Administration cancelled the massive expansion of the Morses Line border station in Vermont. (more information)

Courthouse Construction Projects: After Committee Republicans also helped expose a billion dollars in unneeded federal courthouse construction, they urged the Obama Administration to stop any pending courthouse projects that are based on the same flawed projections of past projects.

Disaster Response and Recovery: After passing the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act in 2006, Republican Committee members are pushing the Obama Administration to implement the reforms and prepare the nation for the next big disaster. Rather than tie communities struck by disaster in knots with bureaucratic red tape, Republicans want federal disaster assistance to speed up economic recovery and get people standing on their own feet as fast as possible.
