John L. Mica

Congressman Mica was recently elected to his tenth term representing Florida's 7th Congressional District, which stretches from the suburbs of Orlando to Jacksonville.

In the 111th Congress, Rep. Mica was selected by his peers in the House to serve a second term as the Republican Leader of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. As the Republican ranking member of the largest committee in Congress, Mica helps develop and oversee federal policy relating to aviation, highways, transit, rail, pipelines, the Coast Guard, maritime transportation, water resources, economic development, public buildings, and emergency management. Congressman Mica is a senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. On that panel he previously served as Chairman of the Civil Service Subcommittee and also chaired the Criminal Justice and Drug Policy Subcommittee.

As the Transportation Committee's top Republican, Mica has called for the development of a comprehensive and national strategic transportation plan, as well as for expediting the burdensome bureaucratic process for approving federal infrastructure projects. These issues remain high priorities for Mica as the Committee works to adopt multi-year, multi-billion-dollar reauthorizations of federal aviation, surface transportation, water resources and Coast Guard programs.

Mica is a long-time champion of both aviation and mass transit. In 2003, Mica successfully passed the last and current FAA reauthorization. In 2008, he authored the nation's first law authorizing high-speed rail.

As the Chairman of the Aviation Subcommittee in 2001, Mica is credited with helping to bring back America's devastated aviation industry from the brink of disaster following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

As a national leader in transportation, Rep. Mica's efforts in this field have gained him recognition by numerous national transportation and infrastructure organizations.

Mica is a strong advocate for the nation's veterans, and he has received national awards from nearly every major veterans association. He is a graduate of the University of Florida and has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees from three Florida universities.  The Congressman is a former successful businessman, served as a Chief of Staff in the United States Senate and is a former member of the Florida House of Representatives. Congressman Mica and his wife, Pat, have resided in Central Florida since their marriage in 1972.
