Congressman Manzullo Joins Astronaut on Tour of Northern Illinois Schools - February 21, 2006 -- NASA Astronaut Dr. Michael Gernhardt and Congressman Manzullo speak with students at Carl Sandburg Elementary School in Freeport. Manzullo brought Dr. Gernhardt to the school to stress the importance of studying math and science, which are necessary studies for astronauts. During his four space missions, Dr. Gernhardt has logged over 43 days in space, including four space walks totaling 23 hours and 16 minutes. He has traveled 17.6 million miles in space and orbited the Earth 685 times. He earned his bachelor's degree in Physics from Vanderbilt University, and his master's degree and doctorate degree in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
