Gloucester, MA - The Open Door Food Pantry awarded Congressman John Tierney with their annual leadership award for his work in support of childhood nutrition. The Open Door highlighted the Congressman's leadership on the Improving Nutrition for America's Children Act and protecting funding for child nutrition programs.

"I thank The Open Door for recognizing my efforts to ensure that all of our local families have enough food to stay safe and healthy," Congressman John Tierney said. "More importantly though, I applaud the work that The Open Door does for our local families, and children. They provide a critical service for our community."

"In this time of record and growing need, The Open Door is pleased to recognize Congressman Tierney for his work to pass a child nutrition bill that supports better health and strengthens the safety net for struggling families in Massachusetts and across the nation," Julie LaFontaine said.

The Improving Nutrition for America's Children Act will dramatically improve children's access to nutritious meals, enhance the quality of meals children eat both in and out of school and in child care settings, implement new school food safety guidelines and, for the first time, establish nutrition standards for all foods sold in schools.

This new legislation, which the Congressman helped pass out of the Education and Labor Committee  this summer, will help reduce childhood hunger and support school and community efforts to reduce childhood obesity.
