Members Applaud NASA’s Role in Successful Chilean Miner Rescue

(Washington, DC) – Today, the U.S. House of Representativespassed H.Res.1714 congratulating the engineers, scientists, psychologists, and staff of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for helping to successfully rescue 33 trapped Chilean miners from a collapsed mine near Copiapo, Chile.

As part of the rescue operation, NASA provided expert advice on medical, nutritional and behavioral health issues. The NASA team also provided suggestions concerning the rescue cages that were specially-designed to pull out the trapped miners.
“NASA’s expertise is second to none in the exploration of space. However, as Ms. Johnson’s resolution demonstrates, NASA’s workforce is capable of applying those same skills to addressing problems back here on Earth. I want to join her in commending NASA’s role in the successful rescue of the trapped Chilean miners,”said Science and Technology Committee Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN).

“My resolution commends NASA’s scientists, engineers and other support staff on their successful rescue of the 33 trapped Chilean miners from a collapsed mine near Copiapo, Chile. NASA’s contributions to the Chilean government’s rescue operations demonstrate the importance of investing in this multi-mission agency. NASA is constantly developing technologies and utilizing techniques that improve our daily lives. I will continue to support NASA’s accomplishments in applying space technology, scientific knowledge and operational skills to enrich the lives of Americans and people across the world,”said Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), sponsor of the Resolution.
