Democrats Reaffirm Commitment to Impose Job-Killing Tax Hike on Small Businesses
GOP United in Fighting to Stop All the Job-Killing Tax Hikes, Will Vote “No” on Dems’ Tax Hike

Washington (Nov 19)

House Democrats have made it official – they will settle for nothing less than a massive, job-killing tax hike on the small businesses Americans are counting on to create jobs.  As POLITICO reports, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told President Obama that Democrats remain “firmly committed” to raising taxes on American families and small businesses on January 1st, telegraphing to the nation’s employers that they better plan for more tax hikes, not hiring more employees.  Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) confirms that Democrats even plan to hold a vote on imposing a job-killing tax hike on small businesses.

In stark contrast, Republicans are listening to the American people and standing together to stop all of the Democrats’ job-killing tax hikes.   Today, members of the newly-elected Republican leadership team for the 112th Congress reaffirmed Republicans’ united support for stopping the tax hikes and helping small businesses get back to creating jobs:

Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-OH) said Republicans will oppose Democrats’ plans for a massive, job-killing tax hike:

“The last thing our economy needs right now is a massive tax hike on families and small businesses -- and that’s what the House Democratic leaders’ plan would mean…Republicans made a pledge to America to permanently stop all of the tax hikes scheduled for January 1st, and that’s what we’re going to fight for.”

Majority Leader-elect Eric Cantor (R-VA) said the Democrats’ tax hike is a “non-starter”:

“We will do everything in our power to stop President Obama and Speaker Pelosi from raising taxes on working families, small business people, and investors. Raising taxes in this environment is a non-starter for me and millions of American small business people who are struggling to keep the lights on and meet their payroll obligations.”

Majority Whip-elect Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said the Democrats’ tax hike is further proof that they are “wildly out of touch” with the American people:

“Raising taxes at this critical juncture in our economic recovery is just further proof that Speaker Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues are wildly out of touch with the needs of the American people.”

Conference Chairman-elect Jeb Hensarling (R-TX): “[Y]ou cannot tax your way to job creation.”

“This debate is about tax increases, and the Republican position is that you cannot tax your way to job creation.  The current tax rates should be preserved for all taxpayers, especially for job-creating small businesses that would be hit hard by any tax increase.”

NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) said this era of historic unemployment is no time to raise taxes:

“Families and small businesses are struggling to make ends meet, and this era of historic unemployment and economic challenge is no time to levy job-killing tax increases on any American.  That is why Republicans are standing firm in our commitment to extending all tax relief to promote job creation and economic recovery across the nation.”

Policy Committee Chairman-elect Tom Price (R-GA) said Democrats should scrap their job-killing plan and allow a vote to stop all the tax hikes:

“Despite recent events and economic evidence, House Democrats clearly still believe in their failed tax and spend strategy…Leader Hoyer and Speaker Pelosi should scrap this job-killing plan and provide for a clean, bipartisan vote on stopping the looming tax hikes.”

Rules Committee Ranking Member David Dreier (R-CA): “[A] ‘take it or leave it’ approach is not what the American people expect from their Congress.”

“A highly restrictive process that limits the vote to a single option is not the right approach.  Any vote on this critical issue should be the result of a genuine debate.  Forcing through tax hikes with a ‘take it or leave it’ approach is not what the American people expect from their Congress.”

A PLEDGE TO AMERICA.   Republicans are listening to the American people, whose top priority is creating jobs, and they are listening to small businesses that have warned Democrats time and again that the looming tax hikes are making it impossible for them to grow or hire new workers.  The GOP’s Pledge to America lays out specific proposals that will help create jobs and put the nation on the path to the smaller, less costly and more accountable government Americans are demanding.  With the Pledge to America, Republicans committed to stopping all tax hikes, cutting government spending immediately, reining in red tape, and repealing ObamaCare and replacing it with better solutions.  Republicans will continue standing with American families and small businesses to implement every provision in the Pledge.
