NOAA: What to expect in South Florida from the Deepwater Horizon BP Oil Spill

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a massive and potentially unprecedented environmental disaster which can seriously damage our economy and environment and could jeopardize the livelihoods of thousands of South Floridians who rely on costal natural resources and tourism for their economic livelihood.

Immediately following the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig, I called on the Obama Administration to halt its plans to increase oil and natural gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. I am a co-sponsor of legislation to initiate a non-partisan independent commission to review the cause of the oil rig explosion and ensuing spill. I also support legislation to repeal the current cap on oil companies’ civil liability for economic damages in the event of a spill. The current cap is $75 million. Experts estimate that the total cost could range anywhere from $2 billion to $14 billion.

Recently, BP has admitted that its projection for assessing the cost of fighting the spill was incorrect. The amount is now $100 million dollars more than previously expected, which amounts to about $450 million dollars today.

Below is a listing of useful information regarding the Federal Government’s response to the oil spill. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at 202-225-3931.
