Harry Teague Names Eunice Man “Veteran of the Month” PDF Print

Los Lunas, NM – Today, Harry Teague honored Joey Clements of Eunice as the “Veteran of the Month,” in recognition of his service to our nation during the Vietnam War and in the decades that followed.  A recipient of two Purple Hearts and the Silver Star, Mr. Clements was wounded while serving in Vietnam.  Following his tour of duty, Mr. Clements began a career with the Veterans Administration, continuing to serve our country by working with veterans across the state.

“The dedication and self-sacrifice that Joey Clements showed on the battlefield is truly inspirational,” said Harry Teague, a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee.  “In defending his fellow crew members with honor in battle, and working to provide his fellow veterans with the care they deserve upon their return home, Mr. Clements has exemplified the very best in our military, and it is my honor to recognize him for his devoted lifelong service to our country.”

Serving as Private First Class in the 2nd Battalion, 29th Artillery, Mr. Clements was working as searchlight crewman on the outer perimeter of his base when he and his section chief came under heavy enemy fire. Even after sustaining severe injuries, Private First Class Clements continued to provide cover for his fellow soldiers as he refused to evacuate for safety.

Following his service, Mr. Clements continued his work for his fellow veterans through his 10 years of work with the VA Clinic in Hobbs.

Teague’s “Veteran of the Month” program is designed to promote veterans issues and is coordinated by his Veterans Advisory Council, comprised of distinguished veterans from across southern New Mexico. Each month, a veteran will be recognized for their service overseas and here at home.
