My Legislative Issues
This is an exciting time in our nation's history, and there are a great number of issues concerning the people of western North Carolina. I've listed below where I stand on these issue and why - and how I'll work to continue making life better for North Carolina's working families.
Budget and Fiscal Responsibility
I am committed to ensuring accountability and transparency in our federal budget while eliminating wasteful programs and spending.
Education
During the 111th Congress, I have proudly supported the Fiscal Year 2010 Budget, which allocates $46.7 billion for education, with the majority of funding directed toward early childhood, elementary, and secondary education.
Energy Security
Energy independence is one of the most important and pressing issues facing our nation today.
Environment
Growing up in the mountains of West North Carolina, I spent much of my time outdoors: Camping, fishing, and hunting. Through these experiences, I gained a deep appreciation and great respect for our natural environment.
Immigration
America is a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of laws. We should not reward those who come to our country illegally.
Small Businesses
Small businesses are the engine of the American economy, and I am committed to helping them grow and prosper.
Social Security
As the Baby Boomer generation begins to near retirement, Social Security will certainly face challenges and strains. These challenges are not impossible to overcome.
The Second Amendment
The Second Amendment clearly gives every law-abiding American the right to keep and bear arms.
Trade
As a member of Congress, I am committed to creating a new direction for America's trade agreements - a direction that protects American jobs and helps American workers
Veterans
We can never fully repay the debt of gratitude we owe to the brave men and women who serve our country. We must respect and honor our veterans by providing them with the best possible benefits and health care.
