Congresswoman Pelosi joins Stuart Milk, nephew of Harvey Milk, to celebrate the eve of the first annual Harvey Milk Day at the LGBT Community Center in San Francisco. |
San Francisco is blessed with a large and vibrant LGBT community and a strong history of advocacy for equal rights for all. Since my first day in Congress, ending discrimination against gays and lesbians has been a top priority. I was proud to join Stuart Milk, Harvey Milk’s nephew, to celebrate the first Harvey Milk Day in California - a time for both reflection and recommitment to the fundamentally American value of equality.
We have made great strides toward achieving equal rights for every American: protecting against violence by passing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act and passing in the House of Representatives the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” We will continue to fight until we finish ending discrimination in the military and the workplace by repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and enacting the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).
I will continue to fight against discrimination and for policies that reflect the ideals of fairness, equality and justice, so that our laws reflect the diverse society in which we live.
