Monday, November 29, 2010

“I have visited our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq eight times, and each time I see firsthand how important packages from home are to them.  For seven years, Dorine Kenney has devoted herself to that cause, in honor of the son she lost in Iraq. This week, the Jacob’s Light Foundation will pack and ship the 400,000th pound of supplies.  That's 400,000 pounds of good morale and critical support for our warfighters,” said Rep. Israel.

Friday, October 15, 2010

Israel said, “I spoke to officials today at the FCC and they confirmed they have offered to mediate arbitration and pledged to keep the heat on both parties to come to the table without disrupting service.  Haven quationed Chairman Genachowski about this issue in March, I know that he shares my concerns about the continued brinksmanship of these negations that threaten to leave customers in the dark.  I’m disappointed that both parties haven’t agreed to hold Giants fans harmless while negotiations continue.”

Reps. Israel, Bishop, McCarthy, Announce Plan to Increase Social Security Payments for 2011

Friday, October 15, 2010

“This recession has hit seniors hard. Their health care costs have risen and they’ve seen their savings wiped out and their home values fall,” Israel said.  “Yet, the Washington number crunchers overlooked these factors when deciding whether to give Social Security recipients a cost of living adjustment.  It makes no sense that Social Security benefits are determined by a formula that isn’t specific to seniors. We need to fix the process so that they don’t get an additional hit from their Social Security income.”

Rep. Israel said, “Ivan McRae served his country when duty called, joining the fight against tyranny from abroad while advancing the cause of civil rights at home.  Yet Mr. McRae and his fellow airmen didn’t receive appropriate thanks for their efforts at the time.  The recognition for the service of the Tuskegee Airmen like Mr. McRae is long overdue and I am grateful for his service to our country.”

STOPPING SUPREME SPENDING

Wednesday, 27 January 2010

Last week, the Supreme Court of the United States inflicted a blow on Long Islanders who want a fair shake against powerful corporate interests. It essentially legalized corporate bribery on Capitol Hill. The Supreme Court has just given corporations a new weapon. Thanks to the Court's ruling in Citizens United v. FEC, they can now spend unlimited amounts of money out of their general treasury funds on advertising in federal elections. CEO's can walk into any government office, from the White House to a City Hall, with this message: "We've got cash to spend for you or against you. Now, how will you vote on this bill?"

Imminently, we are told, President Obama will decide how many troops to send to Afghanistan and what their mission should be.
