Herseth Sandlin Assembles Care Packages for Women in Uniform
Recognized for Work to Improve Health Care for Women Veterans
Washington, DC- Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin attended the first-ever “USO Care Package for Women” stuffing party, hosted by the United Service Organizations (USO). Along with Rep. Herseth Sandlin, Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, and other members of Congress and their staff assembled care packages for female troops deployed overseas.
During the event, Rep. Herseth Sandlin was recognized for her work to improve health care for women veterans. Herseth Sandlin's legislation, the Women Veterans Health Care Improvement Act, passed the House in June. In addition, Rep. Herseth Sandlin was named in the November issue of SHAPE Magazine as one of "Ten Women Who Shape the World" for her work for women veterans.
Rep. Herseth Sandlin said, “With the growing awareness and the support of such individuals as Dr. Biden, I'm hopeful we'll make progress yet this Congress to meet the unique needs of our women who serve in uniform.”

Volunteers gathered on Capitol Hill to assemble 2,000 care packages filled with skin, nail and hair products; hygiene products; and snacks. Care packages will be delivered to female troops deploying to Afghanistan, Iraq and other overseas locations.
The USO, a congressionally chartered, private, nonprofit organization, seeks to provide comfort, morale and recreational services and programs for members of the US military and their family. These services are provided at USO centers in 130 locations around the world, and include free Internet and e-mail access, libraries and reading rooms, housing assistance, family crisis counseling, support groups, game rooms and nursery facilities.
