Washington, Thursday, October 28, 2010 -

Yesterday, Rep. Calvert (R-CA) attended the dedication event for the Distinguished Flying Cross Memorial at March Field Air Museum in Riverside, California. The memorial honors all current and former members of the Armed Forces who have been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

“Attending yesterday’s dedication ceremony was truly an honor,” said Rep. Calvert. “Through the perseverance and dedication of many people, the vision of this memorial has become a reality. Distinguished Flying Cross recipients have received this prestigious medal for their heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Armed Forces.”

On June 12, 2009, Rep. Calvert introduced H.R. 2788, which designates the memorial as the Distinguished Flying Cross National Memorial. The bill unanimously passed the House on March 18, 2010, and is currently awaiting action from the Senate.

“Now, we need the Senate to act and pass legislation that will designate this memorial as a national memorial,” Rep. Calvert continued. “We owe it to the brave men and women who have so selflessly distinguished themselves by deeds heroically performed in aerial flight.”

Since its passage in the House, Rep. Calvert has been active in encouraging Senators from both sides of the aisle to work for swift passage of the legislation. If the bill is not considered in the Senate before the end of this Congressional session, Rep. Calvert plans to reintroduce the legislation in the 112th Congress early next year.

At a gala last night, Rep. Calvert was also honored with a lifetime membership to the Distinguished Flying Cross Society because of his dedication and efforts to secure a national designation for the Memorial.

The March Air Reserve Base, which hosts the C-17As of the 452nd Air Mobility Wing is adjacent to the location of the memorial at the March Field Air Museum. Visitors can witness active operational air units providing support to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is an appropriate setting that honors the many aviators who have distinguished themselves by deeds performed in aerial flight.
