El Paso Service Challenge

September 11, 2010 marks the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York City. With the passage of the “Serve America Act” in 2009, 9/11 has been proclaimed as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Since then, President Obama has challenged Americans to engage in meaningful community service, and Americans have joined with friends and neighbors to replenish food banks, provide health services, support veterans and military families, restore public lands, and more. The Obama Administration has also developed a website, Serve.gov, to help match volunteers with service opportunities.
In an effort to engage El Paso area students in this nationwide pledge, I would like to invite every middle and high school student to participate in the El Paso Service Challenge during the month of September 2010. As a part of the service challenge, I urge students to participate in a community service event of their choice. I encourage them to document their community service, reflect on it, and have their hours verified by school counselors. At the end of the month, all students who complete the challenge will be recognized on my website and will receive a congressional certificate acknowledging their service.

I would also like to congratulate the members of the El Paso Senior Campaign Program at Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe for their community service. La Fe has operated El Paso’s Senior Campaign Program branch since 1988. Eighty-three El Pasoan seniors are currently signed up to volunteer their time and energy to help seniors much like themselves by providing caring home visits and companionship. During 2009, they provided more than 73,000 community service hours to area elderly, frail, and homebound residents. Once again congratulations to the following seniors for their community service:
