House Approves Landmark Energy Bill to Respond to Crisis in Gulf, Increase Oil Rig Safety

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Washington, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives today approved landmark legislation sponsored by House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) that directly responds to the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico, increases oil rig safety to prevent the next catastrophe, and reduces the federal deficit by $5.3 billion over the next five years.  The “Consolidated Land, Energy, and Aquatic Resources (CLEAR) Act” (H.R. 3534) was agreed to by a vote of 209 to 193.

H.R. 3534 was introduced by House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) on September 8, 2009.  The Committee held two days of legislative hearings on the bill, as introduced, on September 16 and 17, 2009, and an additional hearing on a Discussion Draft of an Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute (ANS) on June 30, 2010.  The Committee reported the bill favorably to the House of Representatives, as amended, on July 14, 2010, by a vote of 27 to 21.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Capping a decade of investigations and dozens of oversight hearings held on the beleaguered Minerals Management Service, the House Natural Resources Committee today approved landmark comprehensive legislation authored by Chairman Nick J. Rahall (D-WV) to address the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion and to implement reforms of America's federal offshore and onshore oil and gas leasing program.
