Hastings’ Work for Klickitat and Skamania Counties

  • Ensuring federal commitment to Klickitat and Skamania County schools heavily impacted by federal land ownership are kept through Secure Rural Schools law and Impact Aid program.

  • Authored legislation to protect endangered salmon from predatory sea lions around Bonneville Dam. 

  • Hosted roundtable to discuss issues of importance to the wine industry and local economic growth.

  • Pressing for federal government to uphold promises to local counties of economic development and recreation enhancements under Act creating Gorge Scenic Area. 

  • Working to ensure that federal funds are not used for new federal land acquisition in the Columbia River Gorge.

  • Supported efforts to encourage the Department of Defense and the Federal Aviation Administration to allow construction to continue on wind projects in Klickitat and Skamania counties.

  • Supported efforts to increase TRICARE reimbursement rates for critical access hospitals, including Klickitat Valley Hospital.

  • Introduced legislation to provide a sensible, long-term solution that will keep cabins on federal lands affordable and accessible to Americans, while still providing fair compensation to the federal Treasury for the use of the land.

  • Supporting Impact Aid schools, including the Glenwood school district, by offering amendments to federal education legislation to give preference to Impact Aid schools in any new federal school construction program and encouraging the Department of Education to provide timely payments to these school districts.

  • Supporting efforts to increase market access to Japan for Central Washington cattlemen.

  • Leading efforts to support passage of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement, which would immediately eliminate tariffs on a number of Central Washington products, including apples, wheat, and beef.  Also supporting action on the South Korea Free Trade Agreement and the Panama Free Trade Agreement.

  • Supporting the Washington wine industry by opposing a proposal to increase the excise tax on wine by 300 percent, and encouraging the United States Trade Representative to support the sale of U.S. wines with “traditional” names in Europe.

  • Leading bipartisan efforts to fight cuts to the Market Access Program, which provides valuable marketing assistance to many Kilickitat and Skamania County growers and processors.

  • Secured funding to study a new Columbia River bridge between White Salmon and Hood River, to help provide Klickitat County law enforcement with enhanced communications network, to Bingen based Insitu for work for the Air Force on unmanned aerial vehicles, to help replace Klickitat’s wastewater treatment plant.
