Congressman Doc Hastings

Serving Central Washington

Each year I have the privilege of recommending a select group of young men and women to be considered for admission to the United States Service Academies: the Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs, CO), Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, NY), Military Academy (West Point, NY), and the Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD).

All high school students who are interested in learning more about applying to attend a Service Academy are encouraged to contact Judy West in my Pasco office at (509) 543-9396.  Any student interested in applying for a nomination should review the requirements for nomination and complete the online application, or call to have an application mailed to you.

“The military academies offer a top-notch university education with the opportunity to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree.  Admission to these highly-competitive academies leads to a full four-year scholarship, which includes tuition, room and board, medical care, and a monthly salary.  Students attending the academies agree to serve in the military for at least five years after graduation.  I know that there are many highly qualified high school students living in Central Washington, and I encourage them to contact my office to learn more about the application and nomination process.”

Please click here to view a copy of the application and a list of procedures.  General information about the application process may be found below.  The deadline for completed applications to be postmarked and in the mail to my office is November 5, 2010.

The Nomination Process

To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must meet the eligibility requirements established by law and be nominated from an authorized person including a Member of the United States Senate or the House of Representatives.  Congressman Hastings may nominate applicants who live in the 4th Congressional District of Washington.

Who Is Eligible?

An applicant for a nomination must meet the following federal legal eligibility requirements as of July 1 of the year of admission to a service academy.  He or she must be between 17 and 23 years old, must be a United States citizen, and must be unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.

Service Academies

There are five Service Academies: The United States Air Force (USAFA), Naval (USNA), Military (USMA), Merchant Marine (USMMA), and Coast Guard (USCGA) Academies.  Nominations are required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition.

As competition for nomination and appointment is very intense, it is wise for all interested persons to apply through all sources for which they are eligible and for all Academies in which they have a real interest.  An individual may be nominated by more than one nominating authority and/or to more than one Academy.
