Federal job openings can be accessed by the official website at USAJOBS. This official website of the U.S.Federal Government is the only website to use in applying for federal jobs. It has an array of choices and guidance to find the appropriate job, apply, and follow up. Whether you are a veteran, a student, a senior citizen, a disabled person, or just someone looking for employment, there is a way for you to find federal jobs on this website.

What kinds of jobs are available?

The federal government offers jobs in nearly every field, including science, construction, administrative, and medicine. You can review a list of federal occupational groups at the Office of Personnel Management.  In 2010, you may also want to explore job opportunities with the 2010 Census.

How do I apply for a federal job?

Every vacancy announcement on USAJOBS includes a section with applications directions called “How to Apply.” Application procedures vary across agencies, so be sure to follow the directions included in the vacancy announcement. You may be directed to use the online application program, or to provide additional documentation such as college transcripts or verification of veterans’ preference by mail or fax.

Do I have to take a civil serviceexam?

There is no single civil service exam for all positions and many jobs donot require a traditional test. The vacancy listing on USAJOBS will indicate if a specific test is necessary.

How does the federal pay systemwork?

For white collar employees, basic pay is set under the General Schedule (GS) and is adjusted annually. Employees in GS positions in the continental United States also receive locality pay. The current salary tables and locality pay areas are available here.

For blue collar employees, basic pay is set under the Federal Wage System(FWS). The rates for Montgomery and Prince George’s counties are available here.

Employees in certain occupations and/or geographic areas may receive special rates, which are higher rates than GS and locality rates.

Some agencies have statutory authority to administer their own pay systems.

What is the excepted service?

While most Federal government civilian positions are part of the competitive civil service and require applicants to compete in an open pool, some agencies are excluded from competitive civil service procedures. These agencies have their own hiring system which establishes the evaluation criteria they use in filling internal vacancies. Some excepted service agencies include the FBI, CIA, Government Accountability Office, U.S. Postal Service, and the Department of State.
