Kosmas Announces Deadline Extension to Apply for Retroactive Stop-Loss Pay PDF Print
October 7, 2010

(Orlando, FL) – Today, Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24) announced that the deadline to apply for Retroactive Stop-Loss payments has been extended to December 3, 2010.  Retroactive Stop-Loss Special Pay is available to service members who had their enlistment extended or retirement suspended due to stop-loss between September 11, 2001 and September 30, 2009.  Eligible service members from every branch of the military will receive $500 a month for each month their service was extended. The original deadline for claims was October 21.

“It is great news that the deadline to apply for Retroactive Stop-Loss pay has been extended until December 3rd,”
said Suzanne Kosmas. “Stop-loss orders can cause an immense burden on service men and women and their families and we should provide ample time for members of the military to apply for and receive these much-deserved benefits.”

Roughly 145,000 service members, veterans and beneficiaries were eligible when the program started last October. Despite reaching out through the media, social networks and direct mail, the services are still trying to find thousands of people who have not applied. Only about 59,000 claims have been paid, according to the Defense Department.
