Congressman Hill Presents Medals honoring World War II and Vietnam Veteran Harold Phillips in Clarksville Ceremony

(Clarksville, IN) — Last Friday, Congressman Baron Hill presented a number of medals and citations to the son of a late World War II and Vietnam Veteran who passed away a number of years ago.

Hill presented Walter “Larry” Phillips with the medals honoring his deceased father, Harold, who served in the armored division for both World War II and Vietnam.  His unit was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and assisted in liberating the Buchenwald concentration camp during World War II. He spent the rest of his time in service at Ft. Knox where he was an instructor in the armor unit.

Medals and citations awarded to Harold Phillips for his service include an Army Commendation Medal; a Good Conduct Medal, 7th Award; an American Defense Service Medal; a European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Silver Service Star; a World War II Victory Medal; an Army of Occupation Medal; a National Defense Service medal with one Bronze Service Star; a Vietnam Service Medal; a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon; a Driver and Mechanic Badge; and a Marksman Badge.

The search for these awards began with Larry, son of Harold, who wanted to learn more about his father’s service.  Larry grew up hearing stories of his father’s heroism, and he named his son (Harold’s grandson) Harold Phillips in honor of the late veteran. He contacted Congressman Hill’s office to begin the process of obtaining the medals.

“Honoring our distinguished veterans is a privilege of serving in Congress,” Hill said.  “Veterans like Harold Phillips helped to defeat tyranny and maintain freedom for future generations. I am glad to honor Harold’s heroic service to this country.”

A photo of the ceremony is attached. Also attending the ceremony were Mrs. Marjorie Phillips, wife of the late Harold Phillips, their grandson, Harold Phillips and his wife Mrs. Katie Phillips (pictured with Congressman Hill is Larry Phillips).

Veterans or family members wishing to obtain information on service medals may contact Congressman Hill’s office toll free at 1-866-440-1321.
