Hill: time is running out to submit Stop Loss Payments

Deadline for application one month away

(Washington, DC) - The deadline for U.S. troops who were involuntarily kept on duty after Sept. 11, 2001 to submit a claim for stop loss special pay is October 21, 2010.

“In the aftermath of September 11th, our troops served bravely and sacrificed greatly,” Hill said.  “Stop loss special pay compensates these soldiers for their added service.  With the deadline fast approaching, I encourage all eligible military personnel and veterans to apply for this benefit.”

Stop loss special pay is reimbursement from the U.S. military for troops who were forced to serve beyond their separation date.  Eligible troops will receive $500 a month for each month their service was extended.  Hill approved the bonus pay last October with his vote in favor of the 2009 War Supplemental Appropriations Act.

Thousands of veterans are eligible for these payments, but many benefits have gone unclaimed.  According to the Department of Defense, 90,000 troops are eligible for payment and have not yet applied to receive it.  Hill called on Hoosiers to spread the word to ensure that military personnel and veterans receive the benefits they deserve.

“Unfortunately, many of these benefits have gone unredeemed.  I want to make sure all active service members and veterans in the Ninth District are aware of these reimbursements for their service to our country.  Please contact my office toll free at 1-866-440-1321 or www.baronhill.house.gov if you have any questions,” added Hill.
