Congressman Brown Urges High School Seniors to Apply
to U.S. Service Academies

CHARLESTON, SC – Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) reminds all interested parties of the approaching deadline for accepting nomination applications from individuals who are seeking an appointment to one the U.S. service academies.

“I urge all interested high school seniors to consider making an application to our nation’s military service academies,” Brown said.  “The academies offer an excellent opportunity for those willing to rise to the challenges of a military education.”

The Congressman will nominate top students who apply for the highly sought-after academy appointments in December, 2010 for the class entering the Summer of 2011.  He is presently accepting applications for nominations to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York; and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.  The deadline for receipt of the completed application packet is October 31st.

In addition to an education steeped in tradition, character training, discipline and service to our country, Brown said, “The quality of education and instruction available at these institutions is widely considered to be among the best anywhere in the world.”

Seniors, who have not done so, should begin the appointment process immediately by submitting an application to Congressman Brown.  Nominees are chosen based on personal merit, including evidence of character, leadership, academic excellence, physical aptitude and extracurricular activities.  Simultaneously, application should also be made to each service academy in which they may have an interest in attending.

Applicants must be 17 to 23 years old by July 1st in the year of admission, unmarried with no dependents, a U.S. citizen and legal resident of South Carolina’s First Congressional District.  Applications for nomination to the U.S. Service Academies should be addressed to:
