Transportation & Infrastructure

Surface Transportation Authorization Requests

Water Resources Development Act Project Requests

Our transportation system faces a significant turning point in the years ahead. Costly congestion, aging infrastructure, and the continued need to expand connectivity both here in the US and with nations abroad challenges the ability of our system to meet the needs of our nation. This is a system-wide challenge that impacts every mode, and we see it every day. Delays at the airport, congestion on our highways, rising costs of moving freight, and the need to ensure continued access to our waterways - the challenges are considerable.

As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I look forward to addressing those challenges in the future. While these are national challenges, their impact certainly is being felt in the 1st District. That is why I have been proud to support efforts like Charleston's new bridge over the Cooper River and continued development of our ports. In the years ahead, I am excited about new opportunities such as I-73, an expanded runway at Charleston Airport, improvements in for freight and passenger rail in the Southeast and potential new opportunities for the Intracoastal Waterway - to name a few. The growth in the 1st District has brought about significant challenges, and I look forward to working with our communities on successful solutions.

Nationally, in the coming years we will continue efforts towards modernizing our air traffic control system to reduce airport delays, reauthorizing our federal surface transportation programs to meet the needs of our country's highway, transit, and rail systems, and continue to develop new ways to utilize our waterways. Below is a great deal of information on these topics, and I hope you explore them in detail.

Infrastructure goes beyond roads, rails and runways, it also means our beaches and water and sewer systems. The Grand Strand is currently seeing significant beach renourishment efforts that I was proud to work with my colleagues on, and I am glad that Congress finally passed a Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) after far too many years. Please know that I will continue my efforts on these issues for the good of our communities and our nation.
