Washington, Aug 10 -

Congressman John Shadegg (AZ-03) issued the following statement after House Democrats passed a $26 billion government bailout:

“America is tired of out-of-control spending, yet Washington Democrats reconvened the House to continue their tax, spend, and borrow agenda that has failed for the past 18 months.  Today, Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats approved yet another round of bailouts – this time giving states $26 billion to spend on more government.

“Washington Democrats paired their irresponsible spending with a $10 billion dollar tax increase.  With a stagnant economy and 9.5% unemployment rate, increasing taxes on the American people will further dampen the recovery and is the height of recklessness.

“Democrats claimed today’s bill was ‘paid for,’ yet they relied on rescinding spending from their failed stimulus package.  This is the equivalent of paying your credit card bill with another credit card.  Even more galling, during debate of the bill, House Democrats made it clear that they intend to restore the spending at a later date.

“The bill also imposes funding strings that forcibly prevent states from practicing budget discipline and dealing with out-of-control government spending.

“Every family and business has tightened its belt during the recession, yet this bill insulates government yet again from making necessary choices.  With new reports showing government employees receiving nearly twice the compensation of private sector workers, Congress should not have considered this bill.  Instead, Washington Democrats have chosen to spend more, tax more, and pass the buck to our children and grandchildren.”
