U.S. CONGRESSMAN JOHN SHADEGG REPRESENTING THE 3RD DISTRICT OF ARIZONA

Biography

John Shadegg was elected to Congress as part of the Republican Revolution in 1994 and represents the 3rd Congressional District of Arizona.  Shadegg established himself as a leader in that class and has continued to hold fast to the principles of freedom and limited government.

He gained a national profile when he ran for House Majority Leader to fill the vacancy created by Tom DeLay’s resignation. Shadegg was widely credited with changing the dynamic of the debate and ultimately the outcome. During the race, Shadegg received the endorsement of newspapers, magazines, and blogs from across the country, including the Arizona Republic, The San Diego Union Tribune, The Rocky Mountain News, The Indianapolis Star, The Mobile Register, National Review, Human Events, and Townhall.com.

Shadegg served as Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, the fifth-ranking position in the House Leadership, from 2005 to 2006. At the time, he was the only member of the Republican Class of 1994 serving in the House Leadership. He resigned that position when he entered the race for Majority Leader.

Shadegg was a founder and chairman of the Republican Study Committee. Under Shadegg's leadership, the organization grew from 40 to more than 70 members, and became the most influential and respected force in the U.S. House shaping conservative policy for the country.
Each Congress, he introduces the Enumerated Powers Act, which would require each act of Congress to contain a statement of the constitutional authority relied upon for its enactment. Congressman Shadegg is also known for his strong advocacy for free market health care reform and energy policy designed to reduce our dependence on foreign sources.

He has introduced legislation to promote patient choice, individual ownership, and portability in health insurance. His two bills – the Patients Health Care Reform Act and the Health Care Choice Act – offer comprehensive, free-market solutions to the rapidly rising cost of healthcare by allowing individuals to choose a health care plan that best meets their needs. Congressman Shadegg recently criticized healthcare rationing provisions included in the stimulus bill, citing the need for patients and doctors—not bureaucrats—to make treatment decisions.

The Congressman has been a key player in shaping legislation to increase domestic production and achieve American energy independence. In August 2008, Congressman Shadegg made national headlines with his leadership of the Republican Energy Revolt when he prevented the silencing of conservatives by turning on the microphones that Nancy Pelosi had shut off. Shadegg has also voted to renew solar tax credits and has actively supported the advancement of hydroelectric power—the cleanest, non-polluting renewable resource available.
