Washington, Nov 30 - Congresswoman Kathy Castor released the following statement today regarding the passage of the Claims Resolution Act, which will direct $1.15 billion toward black farmers who faced discrimination in receiving farm loans and assistance. Studies have found that most black farmers in the United States live in Southern states, including Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia and Louisiana – states where many Floridians have relatives.

“In the past, some black farmers faced discrimination by the U.S. Department of Agriculture when they tried to secure a loan or other assistance. Some of these farmers, through a class-action lawsuit, were able to file claims and reach settlements. But many were denied that opportunity because of technicalities. Though we can never truly compensate these farmers for the emotional and financial toll they endured, by passing this legislation today we are making sure the black farmers who were treated unfairly finally get some financial help. I am proud to support this bill and look forward to President Obama signing it into law.”
