CONGRESSMAN SARBANES' STATEMENT ON THE GAZA FLOTILLA INCIDENT (6/4/2010)

As more facts emerge about the flotilla incident, it appears that delivering humanitarian aid to the residents of Gaza was not the primary objective of those piloting the Mavi Marmara vessel; if so, that could have been done by cooperating with Israeli officials in a process that would achieve delivery of the vessel's cargo after inspection for weapons.  Instead, we are left to conclude that the persistence of the Mavi Marmara in seeking to breach the blockade was intended to provoke a clash with Israeli Defense Forces.  That in fact occurred and things went terribly awry, resulting in the tragic loss of nine lives.

SARBANES COMMENDS PRESIDENT'S DECISION TO CANCEL VIRGINIA OFFSHORE DRILLING (5/27/2010)
Washington, DC – “I commend President Obama’s decision to cancel the Virginia offshore drilling lease sale. As the tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico has vividly demonstrated, oil and gas drilling is a dangerous business and I have serious concerns about offshore drilling so close to the Chesapeake Bay,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “President Obama and Secretary Salazar have said that the Chesapeake Bay is a national treasure that should be preserved and protected. I agree with that statement and believe that the potential consequences of drilling near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay outweigh the potential benefits.  The untold damage being done to marine ecosystems, fishing and tourism industries, and the Gulf economy would wreak havoc on our region if a similar disaster occurred off the coast of Virginia.”

STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF SENATOR EDWARD KENNEDY (8/27/2009)

Senator Kennedy will be remembered for many contributions to American life but first and foremost I will remember his effectiveness as a legislator, someone who could reach across party lines and hammer out common sense legislation for the benefit of all Americans. His efforts on behalf of the elderly, veterans, and disabled Americans are part of that legacy. He also felt deeply that we must reach out to young Americans and call them into the service of our country. But the goal he sought more than any other was for all Americans to have access to decent health care. We will miss his leadership in the current debate on health care reform. In his memory, we must redouble our efforts towards achieving this critical priority for our country.
