(Columbia, SC) - The following statement was issued by Sixth District Congressman James E. Clyburn in reaction to today's release of the Final Environmental Impact Statement on the Clyburn Connector:
"Today is a great day for the people of Orangeburg, Calhoun, Clarendon and Sumter counties. These counties and their undervalued rural communities today have hope for a brighter future. In the past they have been promised a bridge of opportunity that has never materialized. The Final Environmental Impact Statement released today on the Clyburn Connector means this project can finally move forward to attain the goal of providing a better quality of life for the residents in the four-county impact area.
"The Final EIS supports the project's viability without significantly impacting the environment. It also includes evidence of the overwhelming local support for the bridge. Petitions submitted as part of the final EIS record demonstrate that nearly 1600 residents in the four-county area want the bridge in their community."
"Having cleared this hurdle, I fully commit my strength and my standing to insuring bridge supporters that this long ignored promise is finally fulfilled."
