Service Academy Nominations

There are 5 service academies:

            United States Military Academy – West Point, NY
            United States Naval Academy – Annapolis, MD
            United States Air Force Academy – Colorado Springs, CO
            United States Merchant Marine Academy – Kings Point, NY
            United States Coast Guard Academy - New London, CT
 
To receive an offer of appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy or Merchant Marine Academy, an individual must (1) apply to the academy of choice and (2) apply for a nomination from a nominating source. Applications to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy do not require a nomination.
 
The basic qualifications to earn a nomination and appointment to a service academy are:
  •  US Citizen
  •  17-22 years of age
  •  Unmarried, not pregnant
  •  Good moral character
To be eligible for an appointment, an applicant must:
  • Be academically competitive
  • Be medically qualified
  • Be physically qualified
  • Have an official nomination

(2) In addition to applying to an academy for an appointment, you must also receive a nomination from a nominating source. These sources are the President, Vice President, U.S. Senator, U.S. Congressman, etc.

To request a nomination from Congressman McKeon, mail a letter to the SCV District Office requesting a nomination to the academy of choice. The letter needs to include the following:

  • Student’s full name
  • Academy seeking nomination to
  • Address and mailing address if different
  • Email
  • Phone number
  • Parent’s names
  • High school or college attending

An applicant can apply to as many academies as they choose. Upon receiving a student’s request for a nomination, the student will be mailed an application packet. Applications are due no later than November 15, 2010 and must include:

  • (1) Page Essay
  • Transcript
  • (2) Letters of Recommendation
  • SAT Score (Code 0238)
  • Extra Curricular Activities
  • Senior Picture

The last step in the nomination process is an interview with Congressman McKeon’s Academy Interview Panel. These interviews will be held at College of the Canyons University Center on Saturday, December 18. Students who have submitted their application will be contacted during the first week of December with an interview time.

The interview panel will decide which students will receive a nomination by the end of January and students will be notified no later than April 15, 2011 of their appointment status. Students receiving offers should accept or decline no later than May 1, 2011.

A luncheon honoring those students accepting appointments will be hosted by Congressman McKeon and is tentatively scheduled for June 11, 2011.
