Biography

Bio Photo 1Born in the White Mountains, Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick’s first words were in Apache, and she has spent her whole life serving Arizona - as a mom, as a prosecutor, a teacher, a small business owner, a community leader, a state legislator and now as a Member of Congress.

Ann was born in McNary, grew up in Whiteriver and went to college and law school at the University of Arizona. From there, she went on to serve as Coconino County’s first female deputy county attorney and as City Attorney for Sedona. As a prosecutor, she worked closely with law enforcement personnel to put drug traffickers and violent criminals behind bars.

In 2004, Ann Kirkpatrick was elected state representative from Arizona’s Legislative District 2, and she was overwhelmingly re-elected in 2006. As a legislator, she sponsored bills to keep the ingredients for meth out of the hands of drug dealers and worked with members of both parties to help grow our economy with tax credits for solar energy and small businesses.

In November 2008, Ann was elected to Congress with the support of law enforcement, firefighters and teachers and a decisive majority of people from across the political spectrum. Since then, the Congresswoman has taken a leadership role in working across the aisle on nonpartisan legislation to jumpstart our economy and get people back to work, stop the spread of violence and drugs from the Mexican cartels into this country, pay our eternal debt of gratitude to our Veterans and make real progress on the issues that are important to Arizonans.

The bills the Congresswoman has introduced in the House include her version of the Land Exchange bill for Superior and the copper area, legislation to help service-disabled Veterans and their survivors keep pace with the rising cost of living, an act to expand a successful anti-drug trafficking initiative into Greater Arizona, and a bill to secure the border by putting more boots on the ground and more of our resources into action where they are most needed. She also led the fight against the White House’s proposal to charge Veterans’ personal insurance, for care of injuries suffered defending our country.

In May, Rep. Kirkpatrick became the first freshman Member of the 111th Congress to have a bill signed into law, working with Sen. John McCain to repeal the Bennett Freeze law that held up economic growth in parts of her district for 40 years.

She is currently serving her district as a Member of the House Committees on Homeland Security, Veterans’ Affairs and Small Business.

Ann raised two children in Flagstaff, Arizona, where she has lived for 25 years. She has served her community as a member of the water commission and a volunteer for numerous service groups, holding the presidency of United Way of Northern Arizona. She also taught at Coconino Community College.
