Securing Our Borders

Years of Washington’s failures have allowed our border to remain open and unsecured, and it has become a gateway for drugs, gangs, smuggling and violence. Trafficking of drugs, guns, money and humans pose a serious threat to our communities, and the Mexican drug cartels now openly threaten violence against our law enforcement. It’s time to take our border security policies in a new direction. I joined the House Committee on Homeland Security to help secure the border, along with coordinating with our national security agencies to prevent acts of terrorism and making sure that our country is prepared to respond to disasters.

One of the first bills I introduced was the Border Violence Prevention Act, which would help prevent Mexican drug cartel violence from spilling over into the U.S. by providing more boots on the ground, new equipment and 21st-century technology for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). I also introduced a bill to expand a highly successful anti-drug trafficking initiative to help law enforcement in my district get access to more funding and information. I am continuing to work closely with Secretary Napolitano to fix the mistakes of the past and maintain a comprehensive and sustained effort to secure our borders.
