Inglis commends direct talks between Israelis and Palestinians

(September 22, 2010)

In reaction to relaunching direct talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) said Wednesday that both sides are to be commended for their actions to pursue a peaceful solution.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu has taken bold steps and great political risk to move towards a two-state solution. I commend him for his courage and willingness to do hard things in support of the peace process,” Inglis said.

Prime Minister Netanyahu had agreed to halt the construction of new settlements in the West Bank for ten months in order to pursue indirect talks through US Envoy George Mitchell, with the goal of direct talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Direct talks began September 1st in Washington, followed by additional rounds in Egypt and Israel. The settlement moratorium expires September 26th, prompting protests by the Palestinians.

“I’m hopeful that Israel will be willing to accept a short extension to the settlement moratorium in support of the peace process,” Inglis said. “It would be unfortunate for talks to fall apart this early in the game.”
