Fiscal Responsibility |
Congressman Hoyer is fighting to address our nation’s deep deficits and debt, and to put our country on a path to a balanced budget. He believes that it is immoral to expect future generations to pay for what this generation buys. He introduced and successfully helped enact into law pay-as-you-go - or "PAYGO” - a proven tool for fighting debt that that helped create budget surpluses in the 1990s. Under this law, Congress must offset all new policies reducing revenues or expanding entitlements, so that they add nothing to our deficit. In short, like families across the country, Congress must make the tough choices to determine our real priorities. PAYGO also forces Congress to look harder for wasteful spending that can be cut. Congressman Hoyer also played a key role in the establishment of the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, which is tasked with putting forward proposals to balance the budget by 2015 and to meaningfully improve the long-term fiscal outlook. The Commission will examine all options and will issue its recommendations by December 1, 2010. Congressman Hoyer has committed to an up or down vote on the Commission’s recommendations by the end of the year.
