Incorporated in 1876, Livermore is agrarian and tech-savvy, rural and urban. Farms, ranches, and the oldest wine region in California can all be found in the easternmost city of the Bay Area. The Livermore Stockmen's Association annual rodeo has been held since 1918. The most advanced research in the world is conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories and Sandia National Laboratories, in the fields of medicine, computer systems, and nuclear technology.
According to the 2008 U.S. Census Department estimate, 80,188 people live in Livermore. According to the 2000 Census, the city of Livermore is 81.9 percent White, 5.8 percent Asian, 1.6 percent Black, 0.6 percent American Indian and Alaska Native, and 0.3 percent Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. 14.4 percent of Livermore residents are of Latino or Hispanic origin, and 4.5 percent of residents report being of two or more races.
