REPRESENTATIVE DRIEHAUS WELCOMES NEARLY $4 MILLION FOR GREATER CINCINNATI HEALTH CARE FUNDING 

WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Steve Driehaus today welcomed announcements by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) of awards totaling $3,946,089 for greater Cincinnati. The University of Cincinnati will receive a total of $2,608,815, Xavier University will receive $192,225, and Children’s Hospital will receive $1,245,049 to support improvements and research projects at these institutions. 

“This is great news for our health care community.  This funding will allow the universities in our area, and other medical institutions, to continue to produce the results that will help sustain Cincinnati's role as a leader in the field of medical research,” said Rep. Driehaus.

Funding for U.C. will support two different research projects.  A project entitled “Clinical Trials Network, Ohio Valley Node U10DA013732,” will receive $1,172,875 and will be directed by Dr. Eugene C. Smoza.  A second project entitled “Transmission Network Targeting Adjunct to Emergency Department HIV Screening,” will receive $782,648 and will be directed by Dr. Michael S. Lyon. Two additional awards will support new equipment for health professionals and residency training in primary care for a total of $553,292.

Xavier University will receive $192,225 for new medical equipment for health professionals. Funding for Children’s Hospital will support two different research projects.  A project entitled “Dynamic Computational Modeling of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Down Syndrome,” will receive $962,769. A second project, will support a project entitled “Dendritic Cells in the Breaking of peripheral Tolerance in Type 1 Diabetes,” and will receive $282,280.
