Job Creation

As families in the First District and throughout America are adjusting to this difficult economic recession, I am well aware of the urgent need for new and creative approaches that produce more jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the unemployment rate in Hawai'i stands just over 6%, with the national average at about 10%. Establishing durable jobs here at home is therefore one of my highest priorities as your representative.

During my trips back home to the district, I have the opportunity to listen to the concerns, hopes, and ideas of many people. What we need are jobs in the private sector that will encourage the growth of our economy. I firmly believe supporting the development of American businesses, which throughout our history have created the majority of our economy’s jobs, will make our livelihoods better than temporary fixes.

Here are some ways I have been fighting to bring more jobs to the First District and throughout Hawai‘i while serving in Congress:

Promoting Hi-Tech Leadership in the USA

Recently I called for the creation of a knowledge-based economy here in the United States. American industries and scientific research have had rich legacies of innovation and production throughout history, energized by the hard-working and determined spirit of people across our country. When new breakthroughs happen in any field, jobs are sure to follow. As we continue toward the second decade of the 21st century, it is imperative that we enact immigration laws that encourage holders of advanced degrees and experience to move to the United States. The Wall Street Journal echoes this belief, and just last recently published an op-ed column which can be read here:
“We Need An Einstein Immigration Policy”

Breaking down Harmful Barriers

I am actively urging my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to make a free trade agreement between the United States and the Republic of Korea a reality. Greater access to Korean markets will help U.S. exports and the Hawaiian tourism industry, the principal business sector in the First District. One of my first speeches on the House floor was in support of this legislation, which you can view here:
“Djou Urges Passage Of Free Trade Agreement With South Korea”

Last month, I introduced H. Res. 1435, which states America should begin negotiations on a potential free trade agreement with the Republic of the Philippines. On June 14th, 2010 it was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means, where it currently stands. Along with South Korea, the Philippines are an important ally to the United States in Asia, both strategically and economically. While the process of making this agreement will take time, the advantages for Hawai'i are manifold.
