“This competition demonstrates the talent and potential of our young people and highlights the lasting value of arts education,” said Delahunt. “I want to recognize all of the students that entered as well as their parents and teachers for encouraging them to pursue an interest in art.”
This past Thursday, all of the entries were exhibited in a reception for participants and their families at the Duxbury Art Complex. Alison Wotton was awarded the “Best of Show” prize. Alison attends Notre Dame Academy. Her winning piece was titled “Study in Black and White”.(Pictured Right, Alison with “Study in Black and White”) She has been offered a scholarship to the Savannah School of Design in Savannah GA. Southwest Airlines generously donated two roundtrip tickets to Alison to attend the national reception held in Washington, DC this June.
The national exhibition of outstanding high school artwork will be exhibited in the Cannon Tunnel, a pedestrian walkway leading to the United States Capitol Building, for a full year alongside other winning entries from across the country. Since 1982, over 5,000 local contests have been conducted that have involved more than 650,000 high school students. With over 100 participants from Quincy to Provincetown, this year’s competition was one of the largest since its inception in 1997.
Congressman Delahunt expressed special thanks to the Art Complex for hosting the reception. He also thanked this year’s panel of judges: Margaret Farrell Bruno, a landscape artist from Wellfleet; MA. Roberta Miller, Executive Director of the Cape Cod Art Association; and Dianne Panarelli Miller, a Boston based award winning Plein Air Painter.
