Delahunt To Host Open Meeting On Afghanistan Policy

04/05/2010
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt announced today that he will host an open meeting on Sunday April 11 to discuss the war in Afghanistan.

“Later this spring, we expect the Obama Administration to ask Congress for additional funding to support expanded military operations in Afghanistan,” said Delahunt.  “In recent months, a number of questions have arisen about our policies there.  Now is a good time to assess our policies there, hear from experts on the subject while providing an open dialogue to discuss the pros and cons of the current policy.”

The forum will be held on Sunday April 11 @ 3:30pm at the Morse Pond School, Jones Road, Falmouth.  Among the speakers will be Dr. Tom Barfield, a professor and an expert on Afghanistan and Muslim societies. He is the President of the American Institute for Afghanistan Studies.  Also speaking is Mr. Joseph Wippl, a former intelligence officer and expert on terrorism.  He is the Director of the Center for International Relations at Boston University.

Delahunt is a senior Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe.  He has actively participated in previous hearings on the administration’s policies in Afghanistan.  The administration has yet to formally present a request for supplemental funding for the war in Afghanistan. It is expected that the request and the current policies will be subject to future hearings and debate.  The forum is intended to inform the public about current policies and their implementation.

The forum is free and open to the public.  For those who may have questions, they should feel free to call 800-870-2626.
